Rare Goldscheider Wien Art Nouveau Figure ” Knabe Rauchend ” (Boy Smoking).

Fabulous polychrome decorated terracotta figure of a bare footed boy dressed in oversized jacket, hat and patched trousers. He is poised to strike a match to light a small cheroot.

Early model number 1194 1140 40 impressed into base.

Listed in Dechant and Goldscheider catalogue of works. Dated 1897/8.

Height 76 cm

Condition: Excellent, no damage, repair or restoration to the terracotta figure. The mouth has a hole for the cheroot.

In 1885, Friedrich Goldscheider came from the small Bohemian city of Pilsen to Vienna and founded the
Goldscheider Manufactory and Majolica Factory. It became one of the most influential ceramic manufactories of terracotta, faience and bronze objects in Austria with subsidiaries in Paris, Leipzig and Florence. For over half a century Goldscheider created masterpieces of historical revivalism, Art Nouveau Jugendstil and Art Deco.
