Powder Blue Lustre Bowl

£220.00

Wedgwood powder blue bowl decorated with orange lustre flowers and lavishly gilded.

Lustre had been used to decorate at the Wedgwood factory since the 1820s, flowers on rims of plates and bowls. However the overglaze technique powder-blue, a method bleu souffle used in China since the Ming Dynasty, was not used at Etruria  until the early twentieth century. Wedgwood perfected a simulation of the original Chinese decoration by a method of stippling cobalt blue onto an already glazed surface. The result was a beautiful and very close imitation of the original Chinese design.

This fabulous bowl was made at the famous Staffordshire pottery circa 1914.

Printed Wedgwood Portland Vase mark to base.

Size: 11 cm high x 24.5 cm diameter.
